Covid-19: Pies, pasta, meat and vegetables in demand as Canterbury switches to home deliveries
Bakeries, butchers, fruit and vegetable producers and others have moved online to offer home deliveries to the Cantabrians in lockdown.
With many local food businesses unable to physically operate stores due to social distancing rules, some have developed websites or are turning to already existing platforms to stay afloat.
Some of the most sought-after delivery items include pies, meat, pasta, fruits and vegetables, and many companies are struggling to keep up with demand.
However, there are also a plethora of places that need online deals just to stay out of the water.
Thing has launched an online directory of places across New Zealand safely delivering locked out food and drink, including the following from Canterbury:
* Coronavirus: Meat company Waikato donates $ 100,000 of ground meat to charity during Covid-19 lockdown
* Kiwi online retailer Mighty Ape ships household essentials
* The seismic boom in online shopping during the coronavirus era
The people of Beckenham Butchery are happy to be able to continue serving their community with locally sourced organic cuts of meat.
Their stocks are limited and the site, beckenhambutchery.co.nz, is the best place to go for product availability and delivery inquiries.
The butcher’s shop is also able to offer click and collect at lower alert levels, but this service is not allowed at alert level 4.
Feed the soul
The Christchurch-based pasta makers Feed the Soul’s online model is well suited to accommodate the lockdown, and they’ve only been busy since the Alert Level 4 announcement last week.
Delivery areas have been expanded throughout Christchurch and have a range of pastas, sauces, Italian desserts and breads to try.
Their online store is at feedthesoul.co.nz.
While stocks are running out, Grown’s online grocery store is sourcing fruits and vegetables from new locations to keep up with demand.
Since not all producers supply supermarkets, the website provides these farms with an additional store to stock and through which to sell their products.
You can visit their website at grandi.co.nz.
Butcher and Delicatessen Halswell
Halswell Butchery offers next day delivery when space is available.
They provide a bit of everything from meat to pantry items, and their delivery week is Tuesday through Friday.
Orders can be placed at halswellbutchery.co.nz.
Hope River Pies
Lyttelton-based Hope River Pies has a range of nine pies available for home delivery during the lockdown.
The pie shop has a big pie delivery day on Thursday, so if you want to order, be sure to get in before that date.
The store already had a pie delivery service before the lockdown, and line-only was necessary for them when the bakery could not be opened.

Mylk Made Bases allow you to create seed or nut milk from a concentrated base, using water.
Mother and daughter duo Corinne and Jemma Turner are still working hard in containment to get orders delivered to the people of Christchurch.

Ooooby is an online store that mainly delivers produce but also milk, cheese, meat and pantry items to Canterbury Homes.
Their products are supplied by local businesses and also include breads supplied by Bellbird Bakery.
The weekly delivery cycle is every Wednesday and their website is updated on Friday.

Filipino bakery Panadero
The Riccarton-based Filipino bakery offers next day deliveries to its impatient customers.
