8h00 While only residents and members can browse the links at Bellport Golf Club, all are welcome to Peter is green (40-A South Country Road), the restaurant located at the ninth hole. Managed by the same team that owns Peter’s Luncheonette in Patchogue, the Kitchen offers an extensive breakfast menu, including a scrumptious Benedict Crab Cake.
10:00 a.m. Now that you’ve got enough caffeine, it’s time to hit the South Country Road home decor stores, like General Bellport (138, country lane south), Copper beech (133, country lane south) and The storefront (139 South Country Road), which owner Melissa Feldman opened last summer after the pandemic caused her to make her weekend in Bellport her permanent address. The boutique offers fashion finds and books and also serves as a gallery with rotating exhibitions.
NOON All this retail therapy is enough to make anyone hungry. Cafe Castello (141 South Country Road) serves the kind of Italian food Long Islanders expect: delicious and portions big enough to feed a small army. Order chicken parmigiana – in classic or pizza form – and you’ll have enough for a filling lunch and leftovers the next day.
2:00 p.m. Lunch on foot with a walk or bicycle around the city. Bellport Lane, Browns Lane, Academy Lane and Livingston Avenue are lined with carefully preserved palisades and houses built in the 1800s by the shipbuilders and captains who once called the village. (Call 631-866-7049 to take an audio tour sponsored by the local historical society.) End your walk at the end of Bellport Lane, where Osborn Park offers a green space and lovely views over the bay.
5:30 p.m. Located on South Country Road, the Bellport Restaurant the interior is light, airy and full of poppy art. Local musicians often provide the soundtrack for the dinner, and the menu is as eclectic as the decor. Starters include cold tomato and dill soup or clam chowder. Favorite entrees are Crescent Farms Duckling with Roasted Pear and Wild Maine Mussels.
8 p.m. The quality of services at The Playhouse Gateway (215 South Country Road) makes it an attractive alternative to trekking to catch a Broadway show. The non-profit theater’s fall lineup includes “Newsies†(August 25-September 11 at the nearby Patchogue Theater) and “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder†(November 17-December 4 at the Gateway Theater).
