Veteran Italian actor Terence Hill retires from longtime TV series Don Matteo, in which he starred for over 20 years.

Hill first appeared on Italian television screens as Don Matteo Bondini – a priest from the town of Gubbio in the Umbrian province of Perugia – in January 2000.

The popular TV series has become one of the most successful and enduring of the Italian state television channel Rai1.

Don Matteo is a wise and helpful character who is good at investigating local criminal histories, together with his friend Carabiniere, Antonio Cecchini, played by comedian Nino Frassica.

But now – after 22 years, 13 seasons and 259 episodes – Terence Hill has said goodbye to the priest in the beret and his trusty bike.

The 82-year-old actor, who starred in spaghetti westerns alongside the late Bud Spencer, filmed his last episode in Spoleto where he received a farewell from the cast and production crew.

But how exactly will the Detective Priest leave the scene? This has not yet been revealed.

However, according to La Stampa newspaper, the new main character will be Don Massimo, played by the Italian actor of 50 years Raoul Bova who would have exchanged the bicycle for a motorbike.

The ten episodes of the 13th season of Don Matteo will air on Rai1 in 2022, possibly starting in January as in previous seasons.
