Despite his best friend’s efforts to save him, he fell asleep and never woke up again, as a coroner later determined that he had died of alcohol poisoning.

Mikey’s mother, Chrisie Yates, issued a devastating warning to other young people after losing her son – who she said was barely drinking.

The heartbroken mother said, “He loved life. He had a good night’s sleep with his friends. He didn’t wake up, but he wasn’t in pain.

“He had a good head on his shoulders. He was very bright and he had the world at his feet. He was really generous and kind.

“He did more in his 20 years of life than most people in 70. He was my blue eyed boy.”

As well as being a sophomore mechanical engineering student at Manchester Metropolitan University, he was part of a band with his friends back home after learning to play guitar at 15.

He also learned to speak Spanish and Italian, and enjoyed mixed martial arts and salsa dancing.

On Sunday July 4, Mikey’s mother-in-law Amanda Cunniffe took part in a bike ride from Manchester to Blackpoole in memory of Mikey.

She completed the 63-mile trip with her best friend, Kerry Cain, both of whom started cycling during the lockdown.

Also keen to raise awareness of the risks of alcohol, Amanda has completed the cycle of support for The Compassionate Friends charity, raising over £ 1,000 to date.

The charity supports bereaved family members who have suffered the death of a child or children of any age, regardless of the cause.
