Jos Verstappen reveals the advice he gave to Mick Schumacher and his mother
Jos Verstappen spoke about how he helped advise Mick Schumacher’s mother Corinna on how her son’s junior career is expected to unfold at a key moment.
Verstappen has long been close to the Schumacher family, with him and former seven-time world champion Michael being team-mates with Benetton in 1994.
After Mick completed his first season in ADAC Formula 4 in 2015, he finished P10 of the Championship and improvements were needed so that he could continue his progress in the junior categories – this is where Verstappen lent a hand. his family.
“I had a conversation with Corinna after her first year in Formula 4 and she asked me which direction he should go,” Verstappen said, via sport1.de.
He told him that Mick should move to the Italian Prema Powerteam “because they were the best in Formula 4 and Formula 3 at the time. And that’s what they did.

His fortunes certainly improved after that decision as Schumacher scored 25 individual victories the following season as he competed for Prema in 2016, through his title challenges in the ADAC Formula 4 and Italian Formula 4 series.
He finished P2 in both championships that year and continued his junior career with Prema throughout his continued ascent to Formula 1.
The Prema machines were under him when he won the European Formula 3 title in 2018, as well as in his winning season in Formula 2 last year.
While he had a rocky start to his Formula 1 career in an uncompetitive car, Verstappen believes he has acquitted himself well and shown his quality early in his rise to the top level of motorsport.
“Mick is doing a good job, the car is difficult to drive,” added the 49-year-old driver. “He will learn this year, next year there will be new cars. We must give him time.
“I think that next year Haas will be more supported by Ferrari. I already think there is some hard work going on behind the scenes.
” It’s better that [Nikita] Mazepin, he spins less, he is better with the press. Mazepin is more hampered in qualifying and in the race.
Rumors began to circulate about Schumacher’s potential future with Alfa Romeo beyond 2021, with the mutual bond between him and the team with Ferrari as well as the future of Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi with the team being guaranteed.
However, with Haas having already diverted resources to its 2022 car, Verstappen believes it might be worth the wait with his current squad, saying, “I would wait and see what happens there in a year.”
