Six years after Volkswagen drove the last nail into the coffin of diesel-powered cars in the United States, compression ignition technology continues in a few select vehicles. Most of them are chassis body designs, mostly trucks and SUVs. The only exceptions come from Land Rover in the guise of Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, which use the TDV6, also known as the Power Stroke in the 2021 model year Ford F-150 workhorse of a half -tonne.

After covering the Duramax family of engines for the US market, it is high time for us to remind ourselves of what kind of diesel options Fiat Chrysler Automobiles currently offers. The smallest of the big three automaker in Detroit has just two under the nicknames EcoDiesel and Cummins.

The L630 for the US market dates back to 2011, when Italian diesel manufacturing company VM Motori launched the A630 with a displacement of 3.0 liters and a V-angle of 60 degrees. Constructed from graphite cast iron for the block and lightweight aluminum for the cylinder heads, the 10-year-old engine design was found to have emission neutralization features on MY 2014 thru 2016 vehicles.

Previously offered in the WK2-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee, the L630 currently sits under the hoods of the Ram 1500 light pickup, Jeep Wrangler off-road utility vehicle, and Jeep Gladiator off-road pickup. The 1-2-3-4-5-6 firing order and 60-degree V-angle optimize shot loads and inertia management, eliminating the need for a balance shaft.

Heat treated individual bearing caps for aluminum heads reduce friction and NVH levels. The forged steel used for the connecting rods and crankshaft contributes to the durability of this engine, as well as the aluminum alloy pistons which benefit from oil jets. Also worth mentioning is the Variable Geometry Turbocharger, Self-Tensioning Single Belt Drive, MultiJet Common Rail Injection, Cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation, Selective Catalytic Reduction, Diesel Exhaust Fluid System as well as the high temperature glow plugs.

In the twin Ram 1500 and Jeep Wrangler / Gladiator, the EcoDiesel develops 260 horsepower and 480 pound-feet or 442 pound-feet (650 or 600 Nm) of torque. Available in conjunction with an eight-speed automatic transmission, this companion exceeds 26 miles per gallon (9 liters per kilometer) on the combined drive cycle according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

The other diesel engine Fiat Chrysler sells today is the 6.7-liter Cummins from the Ram heavy-duty line-up, a torquey juggernaut with an extensive array of emission control systems. Very different from the 5.9 of the good old days, the 6.7 is available in two flavors.

For the standard-output version, customers get 370 horsepower and 850 pound-feet (1,152 Nm) of torque. The high-output version of the Cummins inline-six turbo diesel leads the heavy-duty truck segment with 400 horsepower and a decidedly outrageous weight of 1,075 lb-ft (1,458 Nm).

When properly equipped, the 2500 and 3500 with this engine can tow up to 20,000 and 37,100 pounds (9,071 and 16,828 kilograms). If payload is high on your priority list, the Ram 5500 Chassis Cab is your workhorse.

The latest update for the 2021 model year Ram heavy-duty lineup, the 6.7-liter Cummins features a new calibration, aka more boost, for the sliding-nozzle variable geometry turbocharger. The fuel system, capable of withstanding 2,000 bar (29,008 psi), has been processed at an increased rate.

One of the advantages of the inline-six layout over the Duramax V8 and Power Stroke V8 is smoothness. Ram is also sweetening the deal with more sound-deadening materials than ever before, an acoustic windshield, as well as active noise cancellation for the high-end trim levels of the Ram 2500 and 3500.

The Cummins-Ram partnership dates back to the 1989 model year, when the Dodge Ram’s B-series engine was mated to the rugged version of the TorqueFlite A727 automatic or a five-speed manual transmission.
