What happens when a nice Polish woman marries a nice Italian boy and they start to share family recipes and a lifelong passion for cooking?

They’re opening a restaurant, of course.

Owned by Chris Grguric, Betty Lou’s Cookin ‘Out Tonite in Fayette City showcases the love of homemade food that he and his wife, Betty Lou, share.

“So much food is frozen or made with chemical preservatives,†said Betty Lou. “We pride ourselves on using no preservatives and nothing frozen. “

The offerings include local specialties such as stuffed cabbage rolls, pierogies, barbecue lasagna and ribs, chicken and pulled pork, as well as sandwiches, bread bowls and a variety of daily specials and of desserts. Their popular mac and cheese is also offered daily.

All the food is freshly prepared daily and served a la carte cafeteria style.

The specials, Betty Lou said, are based on what she and her husband are in the mood for.

“Chris and I are home cooks,†she explained. “So we wake up every morning and say, what are we going to cook today? Sometimes it’s Polish, sometimes Italian. Sometimes it’s Italian meatballs with pork, beef and garlic. Our menu will rotate every week, depending on what we feel like cooking. “

The restaurant, located at 225 Gillespie Hollow Road, opened on September 9, but before Betty Lou had a brick and mortar location, Chris said, they operated as a food truck for a year, ” to test the waters “.

The response at the restaurant, he said, has been stellar.

“We were so busy last weekend that we ate a week and a half in just three days,†he said.

Diners at the restaurant will find a family atmosphere with a children’s picnic table and a collection of charcoal mining items and first responder helmets honoring all who served. A bulletin board allowing minors to post their photos is also displayed.

“We want to honor all of our veterans and service members,†Chris said.

A motorized bicycle belonging to his late brother Mickey is hung in a place of honor on the wall.

Betty Lou’s is a family affair, with daughter Kalina and stepdaughter Lyndsey creating the Facebook page, and sons Tommy and Mike working the restaurant.

A fitting nod, since it was the families of Chris and Betty Lou Grgurics who introduced them to the love of cooking.

“We want you to feel at home when you come. Food like your mothers and grandmothers used to prepare, â€said Betty Lou. “I can’t see anything more heartwarming.”
